Family Business Leaders Discuss ‘Legacy & Longevity’ on Capitol Hill During Meeting with Congressional Family Business Caucus Members, Legislative Experts
Rep. Carol Miller (R-West Virginia) Meets with Family Businesses; Group Meets with House Members and Staff
Current and next generation family business leaders met with Members of the House of Representatives on Capitol Hill here to discuss ‘Legacy & Longevity’ of their businesses during their meeting with members of the Congressional Family Business Caucus.
In addition, at the meeting, held last month and organized by Family Enterprise USA, saw executives from family-owned businesses and family offices meet with Rep. Carol Miller (R-West Virginia), as well as other family businesses leaders from across the country.
The event was the third and final meeting the year and focused on “How Congress Can Support the Next Generation of Family Businesses.”
Pat Soldano, President of Family Enterprise USA and of Policy and Taxation Group, hosted the event. The two organizations advocate on behalf of family-owned businesses, family offices, and successful families in Washington, D.C.
Alysha Loumakis-Calderon, CEO and President, ISYS Solutions, Inc and Chairman, Family Enterprise USA, opened the meeting and welcomed the 70-plus attendees to the day-long event of presentations and House Member office visits.
The meeting included a presentation by John Gugliada, Director of Engagement, Family Enterprise USA and Policy and Taxation Group, on recent next generation leadership research from Cornell University.
Family business leaders presenting were Sherri Bovino, Chief Executive officer, Global 1st Flagship; Paige Kavooras, Executive Vice President, Global 1st Flagship; Cindy Ayloush, Chief Executive Officer, Hydraflow; Sasha Ayloush, Vice President of Corporate Affairs, Hydraflow; David Plimpton, Chief Executive Officer, Inolex Inc.; Arthur Knox, President, Inolex Inc.; Matt Nielsen, Shareholder and Director, Nielsen-Massey Vanillas; and Jonathan Thompson, Chief Executive Officer, Nielsen-Massey Vanillas.
Tax & Legislation Updates
During the meeting, legislative, tax, and political updates were given by experts Mark Warren and Russ Sullivan, both shareholders at the law and government affairs firm, Brownstein, and by experts Caren Street, Partner, and Michael Hawthorne, Associate, at the law and government affairs firm of Squire Patton Boggs.
The meetings top discussion points centered on how Congress can help family businesses sustain their business from generation to generation, combat the potential “war on success,” and the importance of transition businesses from generation to generation.
The meeting also included a “What Now?” presentation from political and communications consultant Dr. Frank Luntz and concluded with a presentation on “Family Business Tax Concerns” by Bobby Stover, Americas Family Enterprise, and Family Office Leader for EY.
“This was our most well-attended meeting of the year and demonstrates the continued growing interest in how important it is to educate Congress on the importance of family businesses, and their issues, to our economy,” said Soldano. “Family Enterprise USA and Policy and Taxation Group provides a strong voice in Washington, D.C., for family businesses, family offices, and successful families and we help raise awareness for the largest private employer and greatest generator of jobs we have in this country,” she said. “It’s important Congress understands the many tax and economic policies that hurt, often unintentionally, family businesses of all sizes.”
