19 Women Meet to Discuss Critical Issues Facing Women in Business, Advocating with Lawmakers on Capitol Hill
Women’s Business Owners Group Discusses Advocating on Behalf Women-owned Businesses, How to Navigate Discussions with Lawmakers
Some 19 women met here recently to discuss how lawmakers can better understand the issues women business owners face in today’s uncertain economy.
The Women’s Owners Business Group meeting was held at the headquarters of Global, a 1st Flagship Company and was hosted by the company’s President, Sherri Bovino.
Women’s Business Owners Group (The Group) was founded by Family Enterprise USA (FEUSA). It is a coalition dedicated to highlighting and addressing the unique challenges faced by women-owned businesses.
Women-owned businesses employ over 12.2 million employees nationwide and represent nearly 40 percent of all U.S. businesses, or over 14 million businesses in total, accounting for $2.7 trillion in revenue, according to the Wells Fargo research.
Advocating for Women-Owned Businesses
The meeting’s focus was on how medium-sized women-owned businesses can effectively advocate for their issues in both state capitals and in Washington, D.C.
In the past, federal lawmakers have attended The Group’s meetings, including Congressional House Member Rep. J. Luis Correa (D-CA), a staff member from Rep. Derek Tran’s (D-CA) office, and staff members from Rep. Young Kim’s (R-CA) office.
One key point emphasized at the meeting was the upcoming bipartisan Congressional Family Business Caucus meeting in Washington, D.C., on March 17, and the importance of women-owned businesses being represented.
The March 17 Caucus meeting will feature two newly announced co-chairpersons, Rep. Correa and Claudia Tenney (R-NY). Tenney was previously a Caucus’ co-chair. The Caucus meeting will be held in the Capitol Building’s Visitor Center. The theme is: “Pricing and Profits: Affordability Strategies for Family-Owned Businesses.”
Bovino kicked-off the meeting at Global by asking each of the 19 attendees for a brief review of their businesses and key legislative issues of concern. Global, A 1st Flagship Company is a Navy contractor that maintains, services, and repairs military ships in multiple ports.
“We’re excited to have our two new co-chairs for the Congressional Family Business Caucus,” said FEUSA’s Soldano. “It’s important to have women business owners understand the importance of advocating on Capitol Hill to educate lawmakers on the critical issues affecting them.”
The Group’s mission is to “amplify the voices of women entrepreneurs, foster collaboration, and advocate for policies that promote equity in business.”
The Group was created to further educate and inform Congress on the importance of women-owned businesses and to work with the bipartisan Congressional Family Business Caucus.
“The Group helps create real bonds between women-owned businesses and our lawmakers,” said Soldano. “We excited to see our lawmakers involved in this growing group of women entrepreneurs in all lines of business and industry.”
