South African entrepreneur David Ellen fled his homeland, landed in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and in less than a decade built a $56 million business with 360 employees in eight locations, and sold it to his heirs. The story is detailed in a new video hosted by Family Enterprises’ Pat Soldano. Ellen’s company, Ellen Equipment Corp., specializes in the less than glamorous business of heavy equipment repair and servicing. But it was a business Ellen knew well in South Africa, before fleeing for safety. The classic “American Dream” story was built on one simple customer service belief: “We’re not Number One.
