Carroll and Abbey Flaum, Managing Director, Family Wealth, Discuss Complexities of Estate Planning, Transitioning Businesses with Family Enterprise USA\u2019s President Pat Soldano <\/em><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Planning and preparing <a href=\"https:\/\/familyenterpriseusa.com\/category\/family-businesses\/\">family businesses<\/a> for the next generation of leadership is no simple task, according to two leaders at family business and wealth management firm <a href=\"https:\/\/familyenterpriseusa.com\/donate-2\/sponsors\/\">Homrich Berg<\/a> in a new webcast.<\/p>\n<p>The webcast, hosted by Family Business USA\u2019s President Pat Soldano, features Atlanta\u2019s Homrich Berg\u2019s Thomas M. Carroll, Principal and President, and Abbey Flaum, Managing Director, Family Wealth Specialist.<\/p>\n<p>The topics for discussion are the many critical decisions <a href=\"https:\/\/familyenterpriseusa.com\/category\/multi-generational-business\/\">multi-generational family businesses<\/a> face when looking at the next generation of leaders, and the delicate issue of bringing family members into the business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see a steady need for our client families to create a gameplan and benchmarks that determine the desires and leadership skills of the next generation of <a href=\"https:\/\/familyenterpriseusa.com\/category\/family-businesses\/\">family business<\/a> leaders,\u201d says Carroll in the webcast.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/familyenterpriseusa.com\/donate-2\/sponsors\/\">Homrich Berg<\/a> manages $13 billion in family business assets, with 3000 client families in 45 states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis kind of planning starts with a family mission statement and then gets into the family members understanding the basic inner workings of the business,\u201d Carrol said. \u201cCommunication is one of the critical factors in making this all work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A key member of Homrich Berg\u2019s family wealth guidance is Abbey Flaum, leader of the firm\u2019s family wealth team, focusing on estate planning, transitioning, and business succession planning. In the webcast, Flaum details the critical steps needed to make a successful <a href=\"https:\/\/familyenterpriseusa.com\/category\/family-businesses\/\">family business<\/a> transition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cManaging a family business has all the dynamics of managing your family in general, you need communication, involvement, and you need to know how to keep the peace,\u201d said Flaum. \u201cIf you engage with the next generation, talk things out, then you can shape their interest more effectively,\u201d she said. \u201cYou need to focus on the family first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Flaum suggests creating a family mission statement, set family member benchmarks, conduct regular <a href=\"https:\/\/familyenterpriseusa.com\/category\/family-businesses\/\">family business<\/a> meetings, and establish a family business constitution.
