<\/a><\/p>\nNo Small Business<\/strong><\/p>\n The picture most American\u2019s have of the average family business is a small mom and pop shop, and some are, but research shows that most are relatively large enterprises, with 47 percent having annual sales of over $20 million and 35 percent operating in 11 or more states. In addition, over 50 percent of family businesses employ over 100 people.<\/p>\n \u201cAmerica\u2019s family business is the hidden giant of our economy,\u201d says Pat Soldano, president of Family Enterprise USA. \u201cThe family business is no longer a small farm, but rather a vibrant, large enterprise that operates across multiple states and is a major contributor to local communities, both in terms of jobs and charities,\u201d Soldano says.<\/p>\n The survey found family businesses in America consisted of 23.7 percent in manufacturing, 10.4 percent in construction\/facilities, and 9.75 percent in real estate. Only five percent of family businesses today are in agriculture, according to the survey.<\/p>\n Local Giving and Taxes<\/strong><\/p>\n When it comes to local charities and giving, the research shows that family businesses are the first to step up. The study revealed 76 percent of family businesses giving is to local charities.<\/p>\n \u201cThere is a ripple effect throughout our country when family businesses are growing, and when they are hit,\u201d says Soldano. \u201cJobs are affected first when family business grow, and that is what we want to help, but when they struggle with high taxes and fail, then local charities, the local community, and country as a whole suffers greatly.\u201d<\/p>\n Nearly 80 percent of family businesses operate as something other than a C corporation, typically a \u201cpass through\u201d organization, research shows. According to Soldano, this puts those family businesses at a clear disadvantage to \u201ccorporate America\u201d; which pays a 21 percent income tax rate and family businesses pay a 30-to-35 percent income tax rate.<\/p>\n \u201cBetter pass-through legislation is key to helping family business stay in business after founders pass away,\u201d she says. \u201cIn addition, huge estate taxes force many to sell or shut down, after years of being in business and serving the community.\u201d<\/p>\n Though 85 percent of family businesses say they want to sustain their businesses with family members, the research shows only 51 percent have in fact been able to pass on their business to the next generation.<\/p>\n The research also showed top concerns among family business operators were reducing income taxes, reducing, or eliminating the estate tax, and reducing government regulation. All of this, they say, weighs on their decision making when it comes to the future of the business.<\/p>\n Over 45 percent of family businesses ranked new income taxes as their biggest tax worry, the research showed.
