America\u2019s Family-Owned Businesses Succeed 20 Years Plus, While Fostering Generations of Employees, According to Family Enterprise USA Survey<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Study Shows 66% of \u201cNext Generation\u201d Work in Their Family Businesses, While Employee Family Members Also Stay for Generations<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n

Family-owned businesses tend to last 20 years or more and over 70% have employees that last for generations,<\/a> according to results from Family Enterprise USA\u2019s Annual Family Business Survey.<\/p>\n

The Annual Family Business Survey was among the largest and most comprehensive surveys taken to date, with 730 respondents from 45 states completing the survey in January and February of this year, according to Family Enterprise USA.<\/p>\n

The survey found 81% of family businesses have been in operation for 20 years or more and 70.9% of family businesses had majority ownership<\/a> from first and second generations of family members.<\/p>\n

In addition, nearly half of family-owned businesses (47%) employed 51 or more workers,<\/a> according to the survey.<\/p>\n

The study also found 66.6% of \u201cNext Generation\u201d family members<\/a> work in the family business, while 71% of family-owned businesses have \u201cGenerational Employees,\u201d that is, non-family employees with their family members working in the business for several generations.<\/p>\n

Previous research revealed America\u2019s family businesses, the largest private employer in the country, account for 83.3 million jobs in some 32 million family businesses<\/a> across the country. These businesses contribute $7.7 trillion annually to U.S. gross domestic product, according to research conducted by Family Enterprise USA and Policy and Taxation Group.<\/p>\n

Family Enterprise USA and Policy and Taxation Group educate and advocate on behalf of family-owned businesses, family offices, and successful families on tax and economic policy issues with Congress.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year\u2019s survey shows that family-owned businesses have real staying power,\u201d said Pat Soldano, President, Family Enterprise USA and Policy and Taxation Group. \u201cIt also shows that family businesses are able to keep employees, and their next generations, in the businesses far longer than traditional corporations,\u201d Soldano said. \u201cThis research helps policy makers in Washington, D.C., understand the size, scope, and importance of family-owned businesses and the effect of negative policies have on this large sector of our economy.\u201d<\/p>\n
