Soldano<\/a> [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_5″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.16″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” collapsed=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text admin_label=”1″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ text_font=”||||||||” text_font_size=”16px” background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n It\u2019s going to get bumpy on Capitol Hill next month, so fasten your seat belts.<\/p>\n A slight paraphrasing of Betty Davis\u2019 famous line in the movie, All About Eve,<\/em> but I think as we approach this year\u2019s first Congressional Family Business Caucus<\/a>, Congress\u2019 writing of the new tax bill, and the March 14 deadline for funding the government, it\u2019s fair warning.<\/p>\n Next month\u2019s Congressional Family Business Caucus, held March 11, will find itself in the middle of the new Congress\u2019 first real test<\/a> to keep the government operating while at the same time finalizing the final drafts of both the House and Senate new tax bill proposals.<\/p>\n These two issues are among many \u201cfirsts\u201d being tackled as we all enter the final leg of the much watched and covered \u201cFirst 100 Days\u201d of the Trump Administration.<\/p>\n Many of our family business owners and leaders will be in the center of this storm during the bipartisan breakfast Caucus meeting, hearing directly from Congressional Family Business Caucus Co-Chairs, other House Members, and experts.<\/p>\n The Congressional Family Business Caucus<\/a> was formed three years ago and is a bipartisan, educational Caucus intended to bring awareness to the issues facing family businesses.<\/p>\n Last year, the Caucus was co-chaired by Reps. Jodey Arrington<\/a> (R-Texas), Brad Schneider<\/a> (D-Ill.), Claudia Tenney<\/a> (R-N.Y.) and Henry Cuellar<\/a> (D-Texas). It has approximately 50 members and, with each new Congress it is hopeful that co-chairs will be announced soon. We hope to have a similar bipartisan Caucus in the Senate. We will have an update for you in our next report.<\/p>\n In a meeting room at the Capitol, we will hear updates on the rapidly changing \u201cState of Legislative Play\u201d from our Washington, D.C., insiders at the law and government relations firms of Brownstein and Squire Patton Boggs.<\/p>\n In addition, we\u2019ll get a strategic read on how to communicate effectively on key family business issues from our communications expert, Dr. Frank Luntz. This will be followed by actual in-person meetings with key House members and their staffs to discuss critical issues affecting family businesses, family offices and successful individuals.<\/p>\n The general theme of this first Congressional Family Business Caucus is focused on women-owned family businesses.<\/p>\n Top women business leaders<\/a> attending include Debbie McKee of Little Debbie Cakes, Cheryl Osborn of Casco Contractors, and Global 1st<\/sup> Flagship\u2019s Sherri Bovino.<\/p>\n Women-owned businesses<\/a> represent nearly 40% of all U.S. businesses \u2014 more than 14 million businesses in total \u2013 and account for $2.7 trillion in revenue, according to Wells Fargo Bank\u2019s 2024 \u201cImpact of Women-Owned Business Report.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n As part of the tax writing process, we at Family Enterprise USA and Policy and Taxation Group also submitted a statement for the Congressional record detailing the need for family businesses, family offices, and successful individuals to rely on consistent, permanent tax policy.<\/p>\n In our statement<\/a> to the House Ways and Means Committee, its Tax Team co-chairs and members, and all members of Congress, we asked that they take into consideration the following key positions on tax policy priorities<\/a>:\u00a0<\/p>\n We have also communicated these issues directly to all Tax Team Member Chairs in person, and we will speak directly to them, during our March 11 meetings on Capitol Hill.<\/p>\n The View Inside<\/strong><\/p>\n While we all receive news feeds on our phones, computers, social media, and coverage in traditional media, there\u2019s nothing like being on Capitol Hill speaking directly with our legislative leaders, and with real insiders.<\/p>\n Recently, I spoke with Caren Street, principal and legal expert at the law and government-relations firm Squire Patton Boggs<\/a>, and Mark Warren, shareholder and legal expert, at the law and government-relations firm Brownstein<\/a>.<\/p>\n Street has 17 years of experience on Capitol Hill and in government relations while Warren has worked on every major tax-policy debate since the Clinton administration. He also contributed to the development and drafting of key parts of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA)<\/a> as senior tax counsel in the office of Sen. John Thune (R-SD).\u00a0<\/p>\n Both agree more policy gyrations and negotiation acrobatics are inevitable between the tax writers<\/a> in the House Ways and Means Committee, it\u2019s 10 Tax Teams, the tax writers in the Senate, and ultimately what the White House will sign.<\/p>\n But we need to put the tax bill aside<\/a>, for the moment, according to Street and Warren. The first real issue the new Congress faces is the bipartisan funding of the government by March 14.<\/p>\n \u201cThis will probably need to be bipartisan,\u201d Street, a Democrat, says. Warren, a Republican, agrees.\u00a0 Both also agree it will not be an easy journey.<\/p>\n Warren says, \u201ctax and reconciliation bills<\/a> move on their own tracks.\u201d And this may take longer than anyone expects. \u201cBut first,\u201d he says, \u201cthe government has to be funded.\u201d<\/p>\n When it comes to the tax fight<\/a>, Street believes the more than $4 trillion cost of the TCJA extensions will \u201cpush Democrats away, and so it won\u2019t be a bipartisan issue.\u201d But, she believes, the longer the approval process drags on, \u201cthe more bipartisan it will become.\u201d<\/p>\n Warren, however, sees some bipartisan hope, with \u201celeven Democrats willing to work with Republicans.\u201d But Warren does also agree with Street on one thing: \u201cThis will all be incredibly difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n Slow? Fast?
